Poker Run raises $6,000 for charity

checkforpokerrunSaturday, Aug. 10, was a picture-perfect summer day to host Borden Light Marina's seventh annual Poker Run, which began and ended at the marina in Fall River.

Forty-four boats and 180 participants enjoyed a 69-mile poker run course along the shores of Mount Hope and Narragansett bays. The poker card-themed event included five card stops that included East Providence, R.I., the Warwick Cove Marina in Warwick, R.I., lunch at the West Wind Marina (on the west deck) in Newport, R.I., followed by a stop in Bristol, R.I. The final stop and card was at Borden Light Marina.

Winning top prize went to sevenyear veteran Mikey and Pauly of the Scarab Nail It. Second prize went to David and crew of the vessel Invincible, a 35-foot Fountain from Falmouth. Rounding out top prizes was Francis from the Formula Yah Baby, winning best-looking crew.

Gerry of Knot Right, the 47-foot Skater with helicopter engines took home best-looking boat.

Each year, Mike Lund and his family select local charities to receive proceeds from the run. "This year my family could not think of a more worthy cause than the Children's Advocacy Center of Bristol County," said event organizer and marina owner Michael Lund.

Katia Lund, Michael's mom, and he recently visited the CAC.

"My heart goes out to abused children, and I cannot thank the CAC staff enough for their help in aiding those that need it most," Michael Lund said.

Michelle Loranger, CAC executive director, said, "We're grateful for this event as a way to highlight our mission and philosophy that there is no excuse for child abuse, and as well as have fun, all for an important cause."

National statistics reveal that one in four girls and one in six boys will be the victim of sexual abuse by the time they reach 18. Ninety percent of children are sexually abused by someone they know, love and trust. And national statistics show that 65 percent of parents/caretakers of child victims have been victims themselves. Bristol County statistics show comparable data in all these areas. And yet we know that not all cases come to the CAC and that childhood sexual abuse is underreported.

Among the 20 towns and cities in Bristol County, Fall River has had the highest number of abused children for two consecutive years.
